What we pour and lay
-
01
Driveways and garage slabs
4,000 psi mix, fiber reinforced, cut joints within 24 hours. 5 inches thick on the drive, 6 at the apron, over 4 inches of compacted CA-6 stone.
-
02
Sidewalks and city walk permits
We pull the public way permit in Berwyn, Cicero or Chicago ourselves. Forms staked to the city grade, ADA slope checked before the inspector walks it.
-
03
Stamped patios
Ashlar slate or wood plank pattern, integral color, powder release. Sealed 28 days after the pour, not the next morning, so the sealer holds.
-
04
Foundation and stoop repair
Rebar doweled and epoxied into the old footing. We do not cap a crumbling stoop. Bad concrete comes out, new stoop tied to what is sound.
-
05
Block and brick garages
8 inch CMU on a 42 inch frost footing, bond beam at the top course. Brick face to match the house if you want it. Ready for your door installer in two weeks.
-
06
Tuckpointing
Joints ground out a full 3/4 inch, never smeared over. Type N mortar, color matched to the existing brick on Berwyn bungalows and Cicero two-flats.
Every job gets a written, itemized estimate within three business days of the walk-through. Thickness, mix, base depth and joint layout are on the paper, so you can compare it line by line.
Why driveways crack in Chicago
It is not bad luck. Our ground here is clay. Clay holds water, and every winter that water freezes and thaws over and over, sometimes twice in one week in February. Every time it freezes it pushes up. Every time it thaws it drops. A driveway poured 3 and a half inches thick on top of dirt, with no stone under it and joints 15 feet apart, does not have a chance. It cracks the second winter and heaves by the fourth. I have torn out a lot of those.
So we dig deeper than the other guy, we put 4 inches of stone down and run a plate compactor over it, we pour 5 inches of 4,000 psi mix with fiber in it, and we cut the joints at 10 feet the next morning before the slab decides where it wants to crack on its own. Then we tell you to keep the rock salt off it the first winter. That is the whole secret. It is not complicated, it is just more work, and we do the work.
Joe Sabo, owner
Joe Sabo and a crew of six
Joe started Sabo Concrete and Masonry in 2012 with one truck and a rented mixer, after eight years finishing concrete for other outfits on the west side. The shop is on Cermak Road in Berwyn, ten minutes from most of the jobs we do. Six people work here full time, and the same six show up on your job from the first day to the last. No subs on the pour.
Joe is on every job. He lays out the forms, checks the grade, and is there when the truck backs in. If something is wrong with the pour, he is the one who hears about it, and he is the one who fixes it.

What people in town say
Joe replaced our driveway and the apron out to the alley. He explained the stone base and why the old one heaved, and the new one is dead flat. They cut the joints the next morning like he said they would. Cleaned the alley when they left.
Maria G., Cicero March 2026, Google
Had two other bids for a stamped patio. Sabo was the only one who said sealing has to wait a month. Patio looks like slate and my neighbor already had them out for a quote.
Dan K., Riverside June 2026, Google
Front stoop was falling apart and one company wanted to cap it. Joe tore it out and tied a new one into the foundation. Took three days. Crew was polite and the price matched the estimate exactly.
